What Is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens the underlying muscles of the abdominal wall. The result is a firmer, flatter, and more toned midsection. A tummy tuck isn’t just about appearance; it’s about restoring core strength, reclaiming comfort in your clothes, and feeling more like yourself after significant physical changes such as pregnancy or weight loss.

What To Expect
Dr. Davies performs tummy tuck surgery while you’re under general anesthesia. She begins by making a horizontal incision placed low on the abdomen, typically below the bikini line. The procedure also involves making an incision around the belly button. During the procedure, Dr. Davies:
Repairs and tightens stretched or separated abdominal muscles
Removes excess fat and skin
Creates a new opening for the belly button, so it appears in a natural position
The length of the incision and the surgical plan depend on the extent of the surgery needed to accomplish your goals. In most cases, Dr. Davies combines a tummy tuck with liposuction to sculpt smoother contours. She then carefully closes the incisions.
“Dr. Davies is an expert in her field. She explains all aspects of the procedure so you are completely aware of what to expect. She is also a perfectionist, which is exactly why I highly recommend her.”

Mini Tummy Tuck
If your concerns are limited to a small amount of excess skin and minimal muscle laxity below the belly button, Dr. Davies may recommend a mini tummy tuck. This less invasive procedure involves a shorter incision and does not require the belly button incision.
Benefits of a mini tummy tuck include:
A shorter scar
Quicker recovery
Improved lower abdominal contour
Dr. Davies determines whether a full or mini tummy tuck is a better option for your goals and anatomy.
How Long Is Recovery After a Tummy Tuck?
The initial recovery after a tummy tuck typically lasts 4 to 6 weeks, although residual swelling can last longer. Your experience during recovery depends on the extent of the surgery, but most tummy tuck patients experience a similar timeline:
Week 1
Throughout this first week, you should continue gently moving your body occasionally to prevent blood clots and promote healing. Walk with your body bent forward slightly to ease any potential strain on your incisions and abdominal muscles. Wear a compression garment as often as possible to minimize swelling and soreness. Dr. Davies prescribes medication to manage pain.
Week 2 to 3
You will start to feel more like yourself and move more easily after about 7 to 10 days. You can return part-time to non-strenuous office or work duties during your second week post-op. You can return to full-time office work by the third week, including driving to and from work. You should still avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity.
Weeks 4 to 6
When your incisions fully heal, you can begin a scar care regimen to minimize their appearance. Resuming low-intensity, low-impact workouts is usually OK at this time. Continue to wear your compression garment when possible.
6 Weeks and Beyond
You’ll see the final results and scars gradually fade during the first year. Remember, tummy tuck recovery is different for everyone. If your procedure involved abdominal muscle repair, you can resume heavy lifting at this point.
Dr. Davies monitors your recovery closely and provides detailed guidance to ensure you heal safely and comfortably.
