What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical fat removal procedure that targets areas of stubborn fat resistant to diet and exercise. Dr. Barbara Davies performs tumescent liposuction, a trusted technique that uses a medicated solution to numb the area, reduce bleeding, and make fat easier to remove. This approach offers precise results with a low risk of complications, helping patients achieve a smoother, more contoured shape.

What Areas Can Liposuction Treat?

Liposuction removes localized fat deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise. Common treatment areas include:

  • Abdomen
  • Hips and flanks (“love handles”)
  • Thighs (inner and outer)
  • Buttocks
  • Upper arms
  • Back and bra roll
  • Under the chin (submental area)

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. Instead, it reshapes and refines areas where fat tends to linger, even when you’re doing everything right. For excess skin, procedures such as a tummy tuck, arm lift, or thigh lift may be more appropriate, either alone or with liposuction.

What Happens During Surgery?

Dr. Davies performs liposuction using either a general anesthetic or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the treatment area.

She begins the procedure by injecting the tumescent solution and waits for the area to be numb before making tiny incisions. She then inserts a thin tube called a cannula, moving it back and forth to break up the fat deposits, which are suctioned from your body. Dr. Davies then closes the incisions.

Dr. Davies completes most procedures in 1 to 2 hours, and patients return home the same day.

How Long Is Recovery After Liposuction?

Even though each patient recovers at their own pace, this general timeline can help you know what to expect:

First week

Swelling, bruising, and soreness peak during the first few days. We encourage you to gently walk around your house to minimize the risk of blood clots. Wearing a Spandex®-type compression garment over the treatment area 24/7 is essential to help you heal and ensure optimal results.

Weeks 2 to 4

Most patients can return to nonstrenuous jobs within a few days to a week after the procedure. Continue wearing your compression garment during this time and gradually return to light exercises. Residual swelling and bruising should resolve by the end of the first month.

1 to 3 Months

You’ll notice the results and feel like your usual self, returning to a more active lifestyle that includes regular exercise.

Dr. Davies and her team will provide detailed aftercare instructions and check in with you throughout your recovery to ensure smooth progress.
